Secure Your Account with Google’s New Recovery Contacts Feature

Secure Your Account with Google's New Recovery Contacts Feature

Google has launched a new feature called “Recovery Contacts” to make it easier and safer for users to regain access to their accounts if they get locked out. This feature lets you add up to 10 trusted friends or family members who can help verify your identity when other recovery methods, like passwords or phone numbers, fail.

To set it up, go to your Google Account settings under the Security tab and select Recovery Contacts. After you add and invite your trusted contacts, they need to accept the request to be able to assist with recovery. When locked out, you select one of your recovery contacts, who will then receive a temporary 15-minute code to confirm your identity. This code allows you to securely regain access without giving them direct access to your account or personal data.

Unlike traditional recovery methods that are automated and vulnerable to hacks like SIM swapping, Recovery Contacts adds a human layer of security, making recovery more reliable. The contacts won’t see your data—they only verify a code you share. There are privacy safeguards and waiting periods (such as a 7-day delay before the contact can be used for recovery) to prevent misuse.

This feature is rolling out globally in the coming weeks alongside other updates like signing in using your mobile number and old device passcode. Google is strengthening account security with these smarter, more social recovery options while also enhancing spam detection in its messaging services.

In summary, Recovery Contacts is a simple yet powerful way to ensure you can always recover your Google Account with help from people you trust, complementing existing recovery methods with added security and peace of mind.
