Meta Elevates Instagram Video Quality with Dolby Vision HDR on iOS

meta latest updates

Meta has taken Instagram’s video experience to the next level by introducing Dolby Vision and ambient viewing environment (amve) support to the Instagram iOS app, delivering richer, brighter, and more vibrant HDR videos.

If you create HDR videos on an iPhone, they now come packaged with Dolby Vision metadata that allows Instagram’s app to dynamically optimize color, contrast, and brightness based on your device’s display capabilities. Additionally, amve metadata lets the app adjust the video rendering according to your current lighting conditions—whether you’re watching in a bright outdoor setting or a dimly lit room—so the video looks its best no matter where you view it.

This upgrade solves a longstanding challenge Meta faced: preserving the enhanced HDR metadata during video processing. Through close collaboration with Dolby and open-source video processing library FFmpeg developers, Meta successfully implemented a compressed metadata format that retains the quality benefits without slowing video load times or increasing buffering.

While most users may not notice dramatic changes, creators and visual artists will appreciate the improved fidelity when showcasing their work on Instagram. This milestone makes Instagram for iOS the first app in Meta’s family to fully support Dolby Vision, with plans underway to bring these enhancements to Facebook Reels and other Meta apps soon.

If you’re using Instagram on an iPhone, keep an eye out for more vivid and lifelike videos as this technology rolls out.
